Anatomy of a Food Addiction: The Brain Chemistry of Overeating: An Effective Program to Overcome Compulsive Eating (3rd Edition) Review

I have suffered with food addiction for most of my life. I have aggressively tackled it for the past 3. I have read more than 20 books on the subject ranging from addiction models to everything else out there that has been said. I have been exhausted and confused and failure after failure left me actually suicidal in my misery. Quite by accident I picked up this book and half bored began reading expecting to find the same unattainable prescription for my problem so many books had left me with. Kay Sheppard’s book was one I had read and reread many times early in my quest. I have been an intense member of OA, FAA, and every other AA you can imagine for over 15 years.
Then somewhere in chapter 2 my ears perked up and I began reading on the edge of my seat. OMG, this is me. I couldn’t put it down. I had never seen anything so eye opening by the chapter called The Minimum I was in tears. I had to put the book down and go eat something 3 times I was so triggered and excited at the same time. I stayed up all night finishing it and got started on the very first abstinence I have ever maintained for more than 3 days in 20 years! I went through the 10 day sugar detox Thanksgiving week and I cooked the whole family dinner!!!!
The first and second abstinence has been the key for me. I detoxed from sugar and it was brutal but I made it and my family hung in there just as she said to and I was excused from major decisions and anything else important for 2 weeks. They loved me and wanted to help save my life so much that they got on board the plan. The second book about food triggers written for the family is a must read if you follow this program.
I will go on to the second abstinence of refined carbs as soon as I am stable on my sugar abstinence. I finally believe I can do this. I have hope and confidence that I didn’t have before. I understand soooo much more than I ever did with all those “listen to your body” books or the new age stuff about “go have a bubble bath with aromatherapy candles when you feel like eating”. Sure, thats fine since I just took my bag of cookies to the bath with me!
The physical methods of abstinence along with the understanding of what I need and how to ask for it or provide it for myself literally saved my life. The fervor in which a previous reviewer trashed this book which saved my life prompted me to write this and beg others with real, life long and heartbreaking struggles to read this book. Its the only thing that helped this 53 year old burned out on diets/12step/motivational books etc heartbroken and depressed mother of 4 and grandmother of 3 to finally find a path out of the insanity. I am sugar free but not carb free yet. I already see a much calmer, clearer head and a willing heart in me to go on to step 2. I am so very grateful for this book I can hardly put it into words. Worth the money? It was worth my life.

She is right on – Brenda – St Paul, MN USA
I bought and read this book while in treatment for a food addiction. Her information was so on target with my experience that I bought copies to loan to friends and family as well after I discovered how well she explained what I was going through, so that they could have a better sense of what I experience. Her chapter for loved ones is right on target and her plan for gradually abstaining from sugar, then carbs then fats makes good sense. Makes it do-able without making it feel like one more diet to try. It is a permenant lifestyle change and it takes support.
Put It All Together For Me – An Avid Book Lover – Okemos, MI USA
I have worked with eating issues for a long long time and I learned something so incredibly powerful from this book. I learned that when I binge, it’s not because I’m weak, stupid, self destructive, etc. It is because I do not have enough support. That support for me usually means that I’ve been tuned out to taking care of myself. I can’t really do justice to this book – if you’ve struggled and read more books, attended more meetings, done more teleclasses, studied more methods than you care to remember – this is a must read. It really put it all together for me.
Food Addiction or Compulsive Eating – Anne L. Wing – ME USA
Excellent book, very informative, easy to understand.
Explains the body chemistry of addiction to sugar
and refined carbohydrates.
Promotes gradual abstinence for recovery, first from sugar,
then from refined carbohydrates, which is ESSENTIAL for many
many addicted individuals, including me personally.

Evidence-Based Treatments for Alcohol and Drug Abuse: A Practitioner’s Guide to Theory, Methods, and Practice (Practical Clinical Guidebooks) Overview
Evidence-Based Treatments for Alcohol and Drug Abuse encompasses the developments in the field over the last decade, blending theory, techniques and clinical flexibility.
Research in the past decade has shown that substance abuse and substance dependence are treatable. The field has witnessed the introduction of evidence-based psychological and specific pharmacological treatments. Unfortunately, many of the empirical supported therapies for addictions are still not widely applied by practitioners. The third volume in the Practical Clinical Guidebooks Series (PCG), Evidence-Based Treatments for Alcohol and Drug Abuse, defines the characteristics, classification, and prevalence of substance use disorders, and provides the clinician with practical guidelines applicable across a variety of treatment settings and patient groups.
Drawing on the recent research in the field, the authors provide the practicing clinician and student with an up-to-date understanding of the epidemiology, etiology, course and prognosis of substance abuse disorders that would be relevant to clinical practice. In addition to describing phenomenology and etiology, the book provides a comprehensive guide to the assessment and treatment of DSM-IV-TR substance abuse disorders (SUDs), including abuse and dependence of alcohol, stimulants, opiates, hallucinogens, cannabis/marijuana, sedative, and party drugs.

Criminal Conduct and Substance Abuse Treatment: Strategies for Self-Improvement and Change – The Provider’s Guide Review

This book is as comprehensive as it gets if you are treating substance abusing offenders. The bibliography is outstanding and the information within the text is useful, informative, and practical. One of the best resources I have in my substance abuse library. Highly recommended.
Criminal Conduct and Substance Abuse Treatment: Strategies for Self-Improvement and Change – The Provider’s Guide Overview
Even though many criminal offenders have a history of substance abuse, the link between criminology and substance abuse has, until now, not really been explored in treatment. The Provider’s Guide and The Participant’s Workbook redress that problem and tackle both of these interrelated issues at once. The books draw on two years of research and make use of state-of-the-art techniques for treatment, such as: cognitive therapy; the states of change treatment model; and relapse prevention and assessment measures for individualizing treatment within a group. Their appeal lies in a humanistic approach which will help motivate clients to change negative self-concepts and help break patterns of substance abuse and criminal conduct.

Bioethical Analysis of Sexual Reorientation Interventions: The Ethics of Conversion Therapy Review
Bioethical Analysis of Sexual Reorientation Interventions: The Ethics of Conversion Therapy Overview
The efficacy, consequences and ethical principles surrounding sexual reorientation therapies provided by health professionals has been debated in the public, professional and academic arenas since the first interventions were offered. This thesis applies a model for problem solving in bioethics to the issues raised by this debate. This in depth exploration of the facts and fictions surrounding the provision of sexual reorientation interventions through the critical lens of bioethics will be useful to those patients, health professionals, and health policy makers who struggle to make sense of a highly political health care issue. Sexual reorientation is fraught with conflicting moral and ethical implications that impact the patient and the health professional on many levels. Bioethics is used to bring some clarity to a complex and contentious problem.

Transforming the Legacy: Couple Therapy with Survivors of Childhood Trauma Review

Basham and Miehls have shaped a book quite unlike any other in the social work literature. Transforming the Legacy may help transform our understanding of trauma in terms of its biology, psychology, and social aspects. Painstaking research has gone in the preparation for this writing; the book includes a wealth of fascinating narrative and therapeutic data. It is a research treasure to return to again and again, especially in light of the war in Iraq and the trauma derived therefrom whether by soldiers or the people. The tsunami catastrophe and its aftermath also should draw readers to this work.

Free from Addiction: Facing Yourself and Embracing Recovery Overview
Addiction invades every region and demographic in the United States, affecting more than 23 million Americans and putting families though a heartbreaking cycle of recovery and relapse. Many people give up and never find the right treatment that will enable them to break free of their addiction forever.
Offering a radical new approach, clinical psychologist Dr. Morteza Khaleghi argues that the vast majority of drug and alcohol addiction is driven by an emotional trauma. A pioneer of the dual diagnosis recovery program, he treats the body for chemical dependency while simultaneously ministering to the emotional block that serves as a trigger for relapse. A regular advisor on the Dr. Phil show, Dr. Khaleghi has mapped out recovery plans for thousands of patients and their families. Well-known facilities such as Hazelden, Sierra Tucson, and the Betty Ford Center refer their toughest cases to him, looking to his vast experience and high rate of success. In this groundbreaking book, he teaches you the methods that have made him the therapist that other therapists turn to for advice.
Families will learn how to
• Recognize addictive behavior
• Plan and stage effective interventions
• Work on the family dynamics that enable addiction
Patients will learn to
• Become self aware about addictive behavior
• Identify the emotional trauma that is at the heart of nearly every addiction
• Detect early signs of relapse and take preemptive measures

The Cure for Alcoholism: Drink Your Way Sober Without Willpower, Abstinence or Discomfort Review

OK, so if you’re anything like me, you’ve read maybe hundreds of reviews and probably bought more than one book on how to quit drinking. But after you read those books, all they did was tell you how to think differently, and, hallelujuha, you’re cured. But here you are, drinking again and now you’re more desperate than ever to find a real cure. You may have almost given up, but I have great news for you – read this book and take a cheap pill – and keep drinking – and you will suddenly find that you no longer crave a drink. Sounds impossible right? Well it’s not – THIS ABSOLUTELY WORKS.
This book is indeed ‘The Cure’. It describes what I’ve realized is truly a miracle… it’s what the world must hear about, and I’m somewhat saddened that this is not the mainstream method yet. I understand why rehab clinics and others may never want the vast majority of us to hear about this (it’s far too cheap and ‘idiot-proof’), but ’secrets’ like this have a way of getting out.
Don’t spend another cent on rehab, self-help books, or even therapy (well, therapy can’t hurt, but you don’t actually need it). So I’ll quit dancing around what you’re probably wondering about – if you haven’t already read it in other reviews. Basically, as the book describes much more thoroughly, alcohol is a behavior learned by the brain after years of drinking in which endorphins are released within the brain that are bound to opioid receptors. Over time, this is reinforced over and over again until… (drumroll), a human being is addicted to alcohol.
The miracle described by this book is that when naltrexone – a very cheap and accessible drug – is taken one hour before consuming alcohol, a biological process called extinction occurs and reverses the effects of “alcoholism” – and you lose those cravings that may have devastated your life. Within 4 months or so, most people (90% +) find that they no longer crave alcohol. Try getting that kind of success rate in a rehab clinic, where you still have cravings the entire time and you are almost guaranteed to relapse.
I used to drink about 10 drinks or more a night, whether I wanted to or not. Before long after starting Naltrexone as described, I was down to 4 or 5 drinks a few times a week – that alone was a major change in my life. Now, after about 4 months, I drink about once every week or two, 2 or 3 drinks max – I simply can’t drink any more and I don’t want to. Often I throw away the first drink (impossible before)! I think that at this point for me I’m on the verge of stopping drinking entirely. Even if I never quit completely (not likely), a couple drinks a week or less is a miracle compared to what I used to drink.
Despite all the good intentions of other books, etc, no other resource has been able to remove the alcohol craving for me until this. The science behind this is undeniable. And it describes why no amount of trying to talk yourself out of drinking will produce lasting results.
I hope I haven’t oversold this, but I truly think that this book is life and world-changing. When I think of the millions of people who are desperately looking for a way to reverse the grip alcohol has on them, I am saddened that they apparently haven’t heard of this yet. But the good news is that you have, and now your future is back in your hands. Welcome back to your life!

Reliance on a drug – N. Townsend –
One could probably successfully promote a pet product or cause without insulting a similiar product.
For instance calling the program of AA “voodoo” which relies on “superstition”….is that really necessary ?
Anyone who is familiar with AA knows that there’s a lot of work involved in remaining sober.
It demands a thorough self assessment of personality flaws, guilts, fears and other triggers
of substance abuse.
The very idea of using a drug to “cure” oneself of alcohol/drug abuse is the antithesis
of AA.
I’m responding to the reviews of this book. I haven’t read it. Perhaps it’s unfair of me to
comment on it, but I will anyhow. I don’t believe it will work longterm.
The public is flooded with “Get —– quick” gimmicks. Get rich quick. Get thin quick. Learn a language quick. etc.
Laziness ?
So I can drink myself silly while taking a pill and BINGO !, I’m sober.
Think I’ll stick with AA.
Just science – no chanting, religion or Voodoo – Lawrence J. Konis – Thousand Oaks, CA
It’s always amazed me how so many doctors will actually tell patients that they need to turn to God and AA to control problem drinking. Yes, it’s a VERY challenging issue, but these men are supposed to be scientists in the twenty first century. Finally, an approach that takes the superstition out of the equation. I have been coaching friends in this method and am quite impressed. The book is not particularly well written, but it’s good enough.
If you simply cannot accept the hocus-pocus cult mentality for dealing with your problems, you should give this a shot.
this book is what i have been praying for for years. – –
read this book, take naltrexone exactly as explained and you will truly recieve a miracle in your life if you struggle with alcohol. i have no doubt this book saved my life. the resullts are amazing and revolutionary.
